Codebreakers & War Heros

Visit the home of British codebreaking and hear how this quiet country mansion house played a major role in World War Two, producing the secret intelligence which profoundly influenced the outcome of the conflict. And as an early contributor to modern information technology, the relevance of Bletchley’s story continues.  At IWM Duxford you will get to walk

 hrough the same hangers and buildings as those who served at IWM Duxford and get up close to over a century of aviation with hundreds of aircraft and objects on display.   Another highlight to this tour is a guided walking tour around historic Cambridge with a punt along the River Cam.

We leave Devon and travel to our hotel on the outskirts of Cambridge where you will have time to unpack and relax before dinner is served later that evening.

Tuesday 2nd July

Today we visit to Bletchley, once Britain's Best Kept Secret, today Bletchley Park is a heritage site and vibrant tourist attraction. You will be able to explore some of the iconic WW2 Codebreaking Huts and Blocks and marvel at the astonishing achievements of the Codebreakers whose work is said to have helped shorten the war by two years. There is also now a new permenant exhibition - Hut 11a, The Bomb Breakthrough and this tells the story of the bomb machine in the actual location that housed the machines which broke Enigma. After spending the day here we will return to the hotel in time for dinner.

Wednesday 3rd July

Today we travel to Cambridge and start the day with a 2 hour guided walking tour of Cambridge University which will include Trinity Hall, where Stephen Hawking studied for his PhD in Astrophysics in the 1960s. We also visit Cambridge's oldest college, Peterhouse, before making our way to the iconic King's College (once attended by Alan Turing, the 'father' of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence) and King's College Chapel. Lunch at The Eagle, a 14th century pub with its famous RAF ceiling inscribed with signatures of RAF pilots who fought during WW2 is included. In the afternoon you have free time to explore the City of Cambridge.

Thursday 4th July

After a leisurely breakfast we spend the morning at IWM Duxford where you can stand in awe of the World's most famous aircraft at this historic museum. Be dwarfed by the B-52 and Concorde; get up close to the famous Second World War classics, including the Spitfire, Lancaster and Tiger Moth and stare up into the guts of the Vulcan Bomber . Later that afternoon we visit The Fitzwilliam Museum before relaxing on a 45 minute 'Chauffeur Punt' along the River Cam.
