Friday 19th August

We leave Devon and make our way to Windsor to enjoy a two-hour river trip. Departing from Windsor Promenade, the boat navigates Romney lock and continues through the private grounds of Windsor Castle, past the pretty village of Datchet and on to Albert bridge where the boat turns for the return journey. Passengers can enjoy excellent views of Windsor Castle and Eton College. After passing Windsor Racecourse, the boat passes through Bovenay Lock and passes Sutherland Grange, the Willows and Bray Film Studios. Bray studios was the home of productions including Mamma Mia, Inspector Morse and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. We continue on from here to our overnight hotel, with time to settle into our rooms before dinner is served.

Saturday 20th August

After breakfast, we make our way to Windsor Castle, to view a special display commemorating Her Majesty's Coronation at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. View the Coronation Dress and Robe of Estate worn by The Queen that day. Designed by the British courtier Sir Norman Hartnell, the dress was created in the finest white duchesse satin, richly embroidered in a lattice-work effect with an iconographic scheme of national and Commonwealth floral emblems in gold and silver thread and pastel-coloured silks, encrusted with seed pearls, sequins and crystals. Her Majesty's Robe of Estate was made by the royal robe-makers Ede and Ravenscroft of purple silk velvet woven by the firm of Warner & Sons, and was embroidered at the Royal School of Needlework. The goldwork embroidery design features wheat ears and olive branches, symbolising prosperity and peace, surrounding the crowned intertwined EIIR cipher. It took 12 embroideresses, using 18 different types of gold thread, more than 3,500 hours to complete the work between March and May 1953. You can also enjoy some free time in the pretty town of Windsor for some lunch, shopping and sightseeing before we make our way back home to Devon in the afternoon.
