Both these Cities are renowned for their Cathedrals. Salisbury is a medieval city and the Cathedral boasts the tallest church spire in Britain at 404 ft. Furthermore, in the Chapter House is the best preserved of the four original copies of the Magna Carta (sealed by King John in 1215). Winchester, once the ancient Capital of England during the reign of King Alfred the Great in the 900s now boasts unrivalled architecture, shopping and delicious dining.
This hotel is located in the heart of the ancient city of Salisbury, just a short walk from the shopping area and cathedral. Originally a Georgian mansion house, Milford Hall Hotel & Spa has been sympathetically extended and successfully combines traditional English hospitality with modern facilities. Friday 10 May
Leaving Devon in the morning we travel to Bowood House to discover the rich and fascinating history of Bowood House and the Lansdowne family. Set within 100 acres of beautifully landscaped 'Capability' Brown Parkland. Surrounding the Georgian House is an Italian-inspired Terrace Garden, a beautiful herbaceous border, Arboretum, Cascades and Hermits Caves plus a Doric Temple. After our visit we travel on to our hotel in time for dinner.
DSaturday 11 May
After a full English breakfast you have the whole day to shop and or sightsee in Salisbury. There are so many places to visit - the Cathedral, the museum, stroll along the medieval streets and soak up the history and heritage or enjoy some shopping. Salisbury has been welcoming travellers since 1227. At Salisbury Cathedral you will find the best preserved of the four original Magna Carta manuscripts dating from 1215AD. Nearby, the famous Cathedral Close houses attractions like Arundells, Mompesson House, The Rifles Military Museum and Salisbury Museum. Elsewhere in the city, some of England's finest historic houses and heritage buildings are brought to life with arts, culture, events and entertainment.
Sunday 12 May
With a captivating history and magnificent architecture, the Cathedral has been a place of worship for over 900 years. Suggested places to visit include the Great Hall, the imposing Cathedral (open 3 to 5), and the National Trust's Winchester City Mill, a rare surviving example of an urban working corn mill. Winchester City Museum which documents the city's history from the Iron Age through to the present day. The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, home to a variety of uniforms and medals. Take time to explore the winding streets and the mix of independent shops that fill them. Later, we return home to South Devon.
