Beautiful Spain sailing from Plymouth

Explore the stunning coastal and mountain scenery of Cantabria on this delightful tour travelling by Brittany Ferries. Close to the coast but towering 2,648m at their highest, the dramatic landscapes, alpine meadows and deep gorges of the Picos ‘the peaks of Europe’ will take your breath away. Discover the historic character of the region’s cities: Santander’s Palacio de la Magdelena, once the summer residence of Spain’s royals; San Sebastian’s lively street markets and Tapas bars; Bilbao’s Casco Viejo (old town) and the ultra-modern Guggenheim museum. 

 

Hotel Olimpo, Isla ****

This 4 star hotel with a fantastic location in the village of Isla has recently undergone a full refurbishment. From the hotel’s lush gardens there is direct access onto the sandy beaches. Bedrooms all have balcony and view of the beach or gardens.

Wednesday 25 Sept

We travel to Plymouth to catch the midday ferry to Santander, relax and enjoy the night on board.

Thursday 26 Sept

We arrive in Santander late morning and make the short drive to our hotel in Isla. The rest of the day is free to relax.

Friday 27 Sept

Travel to Santillana del Mar, a fascinating village on the World Heritage List, best described as a living museum. Stroll the cobbled streets and visit the many artisan shops offering local arts and crafts. In the afternoon stop in Comillas, the 'City of Archbishops' with its grand architecture and historic centre, before returning to Isla.

Saturday 28 Sept

Visit to Santander, with many shops, cafés and cultural attractions. The Palacio de la Magdalena, once the royal summer residence, lies at the mouth of the Bay of Santander on the rocky La Magdalena Peninsula, in the city centre is Santander Cathedral, with its octagonal cupola and Gothic cloister. Stroll along the Paseo de Pereda promenade, which runs along one side of the Jardines de Pereda gardens.

A free day to relax at the hotel, walk along the coast or visit the swimming pool & spa.

Monday 30 Sept

A trip to San Sebastian, a stunning city in the Basque region of Spain. The coast road from Bilbao to San Sebastián is a glorious journey past spectacular seascapes, with cove after cove stretching east and verdant fields suddenly ending where cliffs plunge into the sea.

Tuesday 1 October

Full day to the impressive Picos De Europa mountain range. Stop in San Vicente before joining the River Deva Valley, passing through a canyon, and on to Potes, a lovely market town set high in the mountains.

Wednesday 2 October

Visit to Bilbao the de facto capital of Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. Famous for the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which sparked revitalization when it opened in 1997. The museum houses prominent modern and contemporary works, but it's the curvy, titanium-clad building that receives the most attention.

Travel to Santander to catch the midday ferry back to England.
