Monday 21st June
Leaving Devon we travel to our hotel in Colchester. Arriving with time for you to unpack and relax before dinner is served later that evening.
DTuesday 22nd June
Step into history and charm in Saffron Walden, a picturesque market town in north-west Essex. Known for its beautifully preserved medieval streets and timber-framed buildings. At the heart of the town lies the historic Market Square, where markets have been held since 1141, every Tuesday and Saturday. Surrounding streets are lined with independent boutiques, antique shops, and inviting cafés. Afterwards we visit Audley End House and Gardens, one of England's grandest Jacobean mansions, complete with opulent interiors and sweeping parkland designed by Capability Brown. Wander through the impressive great hall, magnificent state apartments, intimate dressing rooms and 18th century gothic-style chapel.
D, FEWednesday 23rd June
We meet our guide for a half day tour of the Essex coast and Blackwater Estuary. Hear tales of smugglers navigating the many inlets and shifting sands under the cover of darkness. Enjoy a stop in the ancient town of Maldon, home to many a Thames Barge. In the afternoon you will have free time to explore Colchester. Previously known as Britain's Oldest Recorded Town, now Britain's First City, delve into the Roman history at Colchester Castle Museum, walk along the beautiful Dutch Quarter of the city, or enjoy the wonderful exhibits on display at the Natural History Museum or visit the magnificent Layer Marney Tower, the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in the UK.
D, FEThursday 24th June
The first stop today is Lavenham, with its Tudor houses, crooked, half-timbered cottages and 15th Century Wool church, Lavenham is one of the most picturesque villages in England. The Crooked House on Lavenham High Street is said to be the inspiration for the old English nursery rhyme There was a Crooked Man and is today one of the world's most-photographed homes. Afterwards we travel to East Bergholt and visit Flatford Mill. John Constable grew up at Flatford Mill on the River Stour. In many of his famous painting's and sketches he captured the places close to his boyhood home and the scenes of everyday rural life there. Discover the views that inspired him, visiting the locations of his best-known paintings

After a full English breakfast we return home to South Devon.
