Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales

Take a return trip on one of the world’s great rail journeys from Skipton to Settle and Carlisle passing over the 24 arches of the famous Ribblehead Viaduct and enjoying beautiful views of the Lakeland fells. We visit RHS Harlow Carr, sitting in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside with some free time to also explore Harrogate.

Grassington is one of the nicest towns in Yorkshire, this picturesque town is nestled in Wharfedale, surrounded by stunning limestone scenery. The town's cobbled streets and traditional stone buildings give it a timeless charm that's hard to resist.

 

Skipton Hotel, Skipton Yorkshire***

The Skipton Hotel is a family run hotel situated just outside Skipton along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, this 3* property offers a warm welcome & traditional Yorkshire hospitality. The hotel features a bar & lounge, restaurant and leisure facilities. The rooms at the hotel are tastefully decorated and include tea and coffee making facilities, with some rooms having a walk in shower (please ask for availability when booking). There is lift access to all floors, although a small number of rooms that require guests to use stairs.

Tuesday 29th Sept

We leave Devon and travel to our hotel in Skipton, with comfort stops on route, arriving with time to unpack and settle in before dinner.

Wednesday 30th Sept

Today we head to Settle, where we board our train to Carlisle and journey along the Settle & Carlisle railway, notably England's most scenic rail route, a set of shining silver rails from Leeds to Carlisle through the Yorkshire Dales National Park the journey takes in 20 viaducts, 14 tunnels and countless beautiful vistas along its 72 mile track. We have some free time in Carlisle before returning to our hotel by coach.

Thursday 1st October

After a full Yorkshire breakfast we head to RHS Harlow Carr, sitting in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, Harlow Carr offers a variety of growing landscapes, from running and still water, to woodland and wildflower meadows. Highlights include the lavish Main Borders, bursting with generous prairie-style planting, and the lush, moisture-loving plants around Streamside. Afterwards we have free time to explore Harrogate the definitive boutique spa town in the heart of North Yorkshire. Its thriving streets buzz with vibrant shops and eateries. An eclectic cultural scene of events is interspersed with many popular consumer shows and the spa heritage that can be seen at every turn.

Friday 2nd October

This morning, we have free time to visit Skipton Market - a unique outdoor market. It's history dates to medieval times, when a royal charter granted consent to The Lord of the Honour of Skipton Castle to hold a fair on Skipton High Street This royal charter consent still holds true today and the Market is open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the year. In the afternoon we head up into the dales to the picturesque market town of Grassington, the Home to the fictional market town of Darrowby in the new series of All Creatures Great & Small, with a bustling cobbled market square, fringed by shops offering everything from practical essentials to totally tempting luxuries. Art galleries, crafts and open studios complete the Yorkshire shopping experience, with friendly cafés, all set against a backdrop of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

After a full Yorkshire breakfast we make our way home to Devon.
