Let me tell you a story…This is a journey back to the books and stories we knew as youngsters and the lives and times of their authors. Their stories are often entwined by their own fond local connections Enjoy a meander through these tales as we travel through some of the prettiest parts of southern England. Sit back and discover Jane Austen Country, see the grand house that is said to have inspired Kenneth Grahame’s Toad Hall and walk the Oxford streets of CS Lewis and, of course, TV’s Morse.

Thursday 10 Sept

We travel to our hotel stopping for a visit to Mapledurham mill, Your guide will be The Miller of Mapledurham and the tour will include the beautiful St Margarets Church, the impressive Archimedes Hydro Turbine and of course Mapledurham Watermill. Mapledurham House is said to be Kenneth Grahame's inspiration for Toad Hall in Wind in the Willows.

Friday 11 Sept

Driving via the scenic North Downs to the pretty town of Guildford, where Lewis Carroll is buried at Mount Cemetery. Enjoy a browse in this interesting town before returning to the hotel.

Saturday 12 Sept

We follow the Thames, exploring lovely riverside towns and villages including Cookham Dean, the tiny village where Kenneth Grahame lived in a large riverside house, and Henley-on-Thames. Here we visit the River & Rowing Museum where there is an exhibition dedicated to Kenneth Grahame.

Sunday 13 Sept

Travel to the great university city of Oxford. It was home to several literary figures including CS Lewis who wrote the Narnia books, and it was the final resting place of Kenneth Grahame, author of Wind in the Willows. More recently Oxford was the setting for the Inspector Morse series. Take a leisurely tour with a local guide. In the afternoon we visit the pretty town of Great Missenden, home of Roald Dahl, where we'll visit the museum in his memory. Flushbunkingly Gloriumptious.

Monday 14 Sept

We complete the "famous five" with a visit Jane Austen's House in the beautiful village of Chawton, the only house where Jane Austen lived and wrote that is open to the public. It was in this country cottage that Jane's genius flourished and where she wrote, revised and had published all her novels, including the timeless Pride and Prejudice. We then return home to Devon.
