One of the last remaining Horse-Drawn Barges in Great Britain, a trip on the 'Tivertonian' is a truly unique living heritage experience from a time before steam. £52pp inc
Book NowTake a one and a half hour ride on the west country's last horse-drawn barge. Relax on a traditionally painted wide beam 75-seater barge fully equipped with a licensed bar, tea and coffee facilities, ice-creams and snacks.
The canal was built in 1814 for primary use of the lime trade and stretches for 11 miles. Tub-boats worked for over 100 years conveying stone from the quarries at Whipcott and Fenacre to Tiverton Wharf, where the stone was fired in kilns to make lime for farming and house building. It is now a local nature reserve and country park. The Tiverton Canal Co is privately owned and run by the Brind family.
The Ducks Ditty Cafe at the canal side only has a small selection of food and drink available, and is too small to cater for a coach full, so after the canal trip we will travel into Tiverton where there are several cafes if you wanted to purchase some lunch there.
