Telling the story of everyday people from the 1820s to the 1950s, experience the sights, sounds and even smells of the past. After spending time in the town Barnard Castle, we visit the Bowes Museum. Often described as a "French Chateau in the English countryside", celebrated for its diverse and world-class collections.

Monday 5th October
We leave Devon and travel to our hotel South of Durham.
DTuesday 6th October
Today, we begin our day with a drive to the market town of Barnard Castle (known as Barny to the locals) where we have time to explore the town and have lunch. You can see where Dickens immortalized 'Dothboys Hall', take a look at Cromwell's refuge, browse the antique shops or visit the castle itself, high above the Tees. We then visit Bowes Museum, just outside the town. This is one of County Durham's biggest surprises. Housed in a majestic French-style chateau, the museum opened in 1892 and houses a superb collection of art including the beautiful Silver Swan automaton.

A trip to Beamish, the 'Living Museum of the North' tells the story of life in the north east of England in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian times. Set in 300 acres of beautiful countryside, step back in time as you take a tram ride through a real Edwardian market town, visit an authentic dentist, pit village and colliery, where costumed staff are proud to share their heritage.

After breakfast, we travel to the ancient and historic city of Durham, acclaimed as a World Heritage Site and dominated by the magnificent Norman cathedral and castle sitting high above the River Wear. We have the day to explore the city with its labyrinth of little streets and alleyways.

After a full English breakfast we return home to Devon.
